Title |
Roman: Sword hilt fragment |
||
Description |
English: A guard or component from the hilt of a Roman, or late Iron Age, sword or dagger of 1st century AD date. Part of the tang/blade junction survives within. The guard retains slight traces of niello lines on the edges and on the collar. The surviving tang measures 18.63mm x c8mm and the blade measures 36.17mm x 6.65mm.
An idea of how such hilt guards were used can be gained from the swords found at Cotterdale, Yorkshire (MacGregor 1976, no.143) and Hod Hill, Dorset (Manning 1985 149, V3), the latter probably being a Roman sword. |
