Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Stepwell or a 'Baoli', as it is known in the native language. This one from the Rohtas fort, near Jhelum, in Pakistan: made by Emperor Sher Shah Suri. It was constructed by carving into the limestone bedrock. It is approx. 100 feet deep, originally would have been twice as much but has covered by silt. It was in use from it's construction in 16th century up until 2019. This is a panoramic view from the steps close to the base: strong sunlight concealed the wider walls higher up.
