As we moved so silently and swiftlyalong, there came to me such a strangefeeling — surely not that of consciousselfishness—No ! And still a tinge ofsadness crept into my heart, for I couldnot help thinking of those who may neverrealize or enjoy, for even a day, the won-derful charm of our Ontario Highlands. My heart at the time was within the point almost on top of a beaver who wasenjoying his early morning meal of suc-culent alder or juicy poplar bark. Skirting the shore of the river we sawin front of us a large buck, which appear-ed to take as much interest in us as wedid in him. He stood until we couldplainly see his soft dark eyes. LUNCH ON THE SHORES OF CROWN LAKE. walls of the crowded hospitals of thelarge cities where the air has been usedover and over again. I gazed all aboutme on this fair summer morning andthanked God as I inhaled the purest ofair that he allowed me to enjoy the beau-ties of this Paradise of our NorthCountry. The portage from White Lake intoBeaver Pond is short and easy and onecan well afford a few minutes to inspectthe wonderful beaver dam which holdsthis body of water back. Fancy theselittle creatures creating lakes for theirown purposes ! Our next portage was a short one intoLittle Island Lake—a gem, where onecould easily spend a whole week if time 348 ROD AND GUN AND MOTOR SPORTS IN CANADA permitted.
