camp on our return trip,dead tired. An early start on Wednes-day morning showed us thecreeks, marshes and riverswere frozen, causing the deerto change their courses. Ap-parently the deer ran north tothe open lake and we had nosuccess. On Thursday the dogs againgave tongue as early as half past seven.They were on the hills to the west andsoon started deer. The amateur, whoseemed to be the most fortunate in hav-ing deer run to him, was the first toopen proceedings by firing four shots ata large doewhich finding the bullets cometoo close turned back; after another livelyrun on the hills, circled, and attemptedto pass my big brothers stand. A fewshots from his 38.55, one of which brokeits hind leg, caused it to stop in the al-ders. I ran for nearly a half a mile andthe dog coming up at the same timedashed into the bushes. From the noisemade, it appeared as if the dog has seizedthe deer. It ran out on the cleared landwithin three rods of the water, and atthe second shot which went through

THE DESPATCHER AT WORK. the neck, it fell dead. The most excit-ing episode of the whole hunt wasthe sight of the amateur running upto head off the deer knife in hand. Hiscartridges had given out and in the racehe lost his mitts and overcoat. He hadposted himself behind a large stump,waiting for the deer to come up to him,and I was sorry I had disappointed hisexpectations of a fight. That day ended a pleasant hunt whichwe all enjoyed to the full. Our bag con-sisted of five deer,twenty-seven partridgesseveral rabbits and duck and a largeowl. Some of the boys tried the fishing andsucceeded in taking fifty-five pike andwhitefish,and in cddition a bill fish fourfeet long.
