Description

Photographed on Peninnis, St Mary's, Isles of Scilly.

Rockpool

To a human eye, or the eye of a blenny, The rockpool is a candy-shop of colours: Coralina pink as musk, kelps, oar-shaped Made of chocolate leather, Ulvas Pistachio green, Palmaria, Red as the tongue-staining, flaccid Candies the children mouth in class.

It is the sideways scuttle of a retreating crab, A frightened goby’s blinkless eye, The urchin’s serried army bristling. It is limpets and pixie-cups and Slowly moving snails clearing trails In sand.

            But for this lone anemone,

The garden grows feelings like passing flowers Before they are broken by the deluge.

It is the turmoil and pounding, The tentacle-tearing surge, the influx And the outflow, the brushing Of a fish soon stricken, and then The biting desiccation, the sharp And saline crust which bids me shrink.

I am a globule, a blind jelly, Bare to the wind, touching only Myself.

Source material: Inspired by a visit to rockpools near the Store House Battery, the Garrison, St. Mary’s, 7th February 2004. Coralina, Ulva and Palmaria are all generic names of seaweeds.
