DescriptionRockford Illinois 1891 Antique Panoramic Map.jpg |
English: A panoramic map of the city of Rockford, Illinois c. 1891.
Before airplanes and before satellite imagery, the panoramic map was a popular cartographic form used to depict American and Canadian cities and towns as well as US National Parks during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Known also as bird's-eye views, perspective maps, and aero views, panoramic maps are non-photographic representations of cities portrayed as if viewed from above at an oblique angle. Although not generally drawn to scale, they show street patterns, individual buildings, and major landscape features in perspective. The Library of Congress holds over 1,500 panoramic maps which have been carefully scanned using high resolution imaging and are now available to the public. |
