Description |
English: Cuts made into the side of a hill reveal layers of volcanic rocks, arching under the ferns and moss. Crater Rim Historic District. Rock cuts near Kilauea Iki reveal unique volcanic formations. The rock cuts function both as utility and design elements of the road construction, defining its character. Following the tenets of naturalistic landscape design, NPS landscape architects who designed park roads in the 1920s and 1930s intended to make rock cuts appear natural.
