n ojDen movement across the faceof rock to our right, working gradually upwards andaiming for a narrow cleft that partially separated a 68 EOCK-CLIMBING small pinnacle from the face. The view of thispinnacle from the middle of Colliers Climb is simplyexquisite, well worth showing to an enterprisingcamera. From the pinnacle a slight descent gave an in-spiring view downwards of the long smooth cornerthat I had unsuccessfully attacked a short time pre-viously. At our level the crack had expanded intoa respectable chimney, that could be easily enteredtwenty feet higher after a brief clamber on thebuttress. It was disappointing to find then thatsomething very like a scree gully, with only moder-ately interesting scrambling, was to finish our workin the great cleft. Rather than close the operationsso quietly the majority voted for an attempt on theslightly-indicated branch exit thirty feet to the right;and their enterprise was rewarded by the conquestof a particularly neat pitch at the top.

Keswick Attitudes on Scawfell Pinnacle (Face page 69) 69 CHAPTER y SC AW FELL PINNACLE Ordinary Route.—This magnificent pinnacleoffers the finest bit of rock scenery in the Scawfellmassif. It rises up some 600 feet from the foot ofLords Rake in steep and almost unclimbable slabsof smooth rock, forming the left-hand boundary ofDeep Ghyll and the right of Steep Ghyll. Thelatter, and the Professors Chimney springing up outof Deep Ghyll, cut it away to some extent from themain mountain mass, from which it is separated bya narrow col or gap familiarly known as the Jordan.Unfortunately this gap is too high, and the top ofthe pinnacle is reached therefrom by a couple ofminutes scrambling. If only the gap were impossibleto reach from above, the climb of Scawfell Pinnaclewould necessarily involve some splendid work, andit could almost claim the suggested name of theLittle Dru of the Lake District. From a higher point of view Mr. Williamsonscomparison is very
