t is probable that thepitch turns back fifty per cent, of the people whoessay to climb it. On the sa.me eastern face, a few yards furtheraway to the north, is the Shamrock Chimney, a thincrack running somewhat irregularly upwards to thesummit ridge. The credit of the first ascent belongsto Mr. John Robinson, whose keen eye and soundjudgment made the ascent an accomplished fact, onSeptember 23, 1894, within a few days of his dis-covery of the chimney. There the Great waterfalldisturbs the even tenor of its way, and is said tooffer a formidable obstruction to our approach of thewest face from below. From the Shamrock side we can get the bestidea of the shape of the Eock. We have first thePisgah rising out of the upper fellside, a pinnacleeasily accessible and only forty or fifty feet high. Then to the right comes the actual Pillar Rock, the High Man, separated from Pisgah by a narrowvertical cleft, the Jordan, that renders the ascentfrom Pisgah almost an impossibility. At the Jordantwo gullies meet; one up the east side, short andeasy, the other up the west side, longer and moredifficult. The outline of the rock is marked by a notch tothe right of the summit, where the Great Chimneyfinishes, and a little further northwards it shows asudden drop to the level of the Low Man, theimmense bu
