Dr. Li-Piin Sung (right, facing camera) a physicist with the NIST Engineering Laboratory’s Materials and Construction Research Division, explains the workings of the NIST Integrating SPHERE which stands for Simulated Photo-degradation via High Energy Radiant Emission to students and faculty from Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, MN. The SPHERE enables scientists to create and control a number of environmental pressures, including sunlight and humidity. Measuring how well materials perform under various weather conditions allows industry researchers to make improvements in future products.
