UPDATED May 2024 Rochester, New York - The Times Square Building was originally the headquarters of the Genesee Valley Trust (GVT) company bank. Ground was officially broken Friday May 10, 1929. The cornerstone was placed on Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929 the day the Great Depression began. It was one of Rochester’s first skyscrapers designed by noted architect Ralph T. Walker of Voorhees, Gmelin and Walker and Rochester consulting architect Carl C. Ade. The "Wings of Progress" tower is truly unique. Wing patterns were made by LIBERTY PATTERN WORKS and cast at Rochester foundry Anstice Company on Humbolt Street in Rochester. Aluminum wings are 42 feet high, 14.5 feet wide at the center, and weigh 7500 pounds each. They sit on fabricated steel frames. This is one of Rochester’s very active and nationally significant office buildings. (Submitted photograph by photographer and part time building Concierge David N. Boyer)
