Description |
English: A view of the engagement between a British squadron, commanded by Sir Samuel Hood (1762-1814), and a French squadron, commanded by Commodore Éleonore-Jean-Nicolas Soleil (1767-1824) off Rochefort on 25 September 1806. Napoleonic Wars (1803-15).
One of a pair of prints (the companion print is at RCIN 735131.a.) depicting a British squadron under the command of Sir Samuel Hood intercepting a French squadron of five frigates and two corvettes, heavily laden with stores, sailing to the French West Indies. The action took place off the port of Rochefort and resulted in a British victory, the British capturing four of the seven French ships. The British ship Monarch, in the centre of the view, can be seen towing the Minerve and the Armide, each with their flags struck and trailing in the sea. Edward Orme (1775-28 September 1848) (publisher and printmaker) [bottom centre, below title:] Published July 1.st 1807, by Edw.d Orme, Bond Street, the corner of Brook Street, London; [bottom centre, below edge of view:] Edw.d Orme Excudit Anonymous (draughtsman) [bottom left, below edge of view:] From an Original drawing taken on board the Monarch.
