DescriptionRoche moutonee, Helsinki - panoramio.jpg |
roche moutonee, Helsinki This outcrop of bedrock in a Helsinki city park was smoothed, polished, and scratched by Pleistocene glaciation while under hundreds of meters of ice. When the ice sheet melted around 10,000 years ago this roche moutonée (Fr. rock sheep) was submerged beneath the incoming Baltic Sea. The land surface was subsequently uplifted above sea level from elastic rebound. Even today the land surface of Fennoscandia rise at rates as high as 0.5-1 cm per year as a result of the removal of melted ice. |
