"This old single fluke anchor was buried in the dock and used as a "holdfast" during the launch and retrieval of Robin Hood's Bay's self-righting rowing lifeboats. Ephraim and Hannah Fox (1881 - 1903) Mary Ann Lockwood (1903-1931) The anchor was discovered in 1963 and it stands as a symbol of the ingenuity and bravery of generations of Robin Hood's Bay volunteer lifeboat crews".

"Ephraim and Hannah Fox" and "Mary Ann Lockwood" were the names of the lifeboats. From an account by the Royal National Life-Boat Institution of the Robin Hood's Bay Station: "1881-1902 Ephraim & Hannah Fox, a gift of Mr & Mrs Fox's children per Mr C Fox of Stancliffe, nr Dewsbury, 11 launches on service, 24 lives rescued "1902-1931 Mary Ann Lockwood. Cost defrayed from a legacy of Mr T Lockwood of Harrogate, 35 launches on service, 58 lives saved."
