He half rosefrom his seat, and then he sank down again. Meanwhile the high cellarer had slipped upthe stairs and looked out through the loopholein the wall. He came running down in greatdelight. Its he, its he, he cried, but his clothesare dusty and ragged and stained and patched,and the friend thats with him looks even worse.He has no money. Then the stout abbot took courage and openedthe great hall door, but not a word of welcomedid he speak. The two knights entered theroom, and gave courteous greeting, first to theabbot, then to the lord high justice, then tothe sheriff, and then to the high cellarer.The knight bent on one knee before the stoutabbot. Sir Abbot, said he, it may well be that agreat man like you has forgotten the debt of fourhundred pounds that I owe you. Have you brought your money ? growledthe abbot. (198)
