35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Artiodactyla; Family: Bovidae; Genus: Hippotragus; Genus species: Hippotragus equinus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 190-240 cm; Height: 126-145 cm; Weight: 260-280 kg; Identification: The coat color of the roan antelope varies from sandy fawn to dark red. The undersides are white, and the face markings are black and white. This antelope has long ear tufts, a stiff mane, and horns that curve backward; Habitat: Open woodlands, dry bush, savannas near water; Diet: Herbivore: grass, small amounts of leaves and fruit; Reproduction: During the mating season, a bull will separate a receptive cow from the herd. The two will live separately for awhile during the mating process. The gestation period is 8.5-9 months long with a single calf being produced; Social Structure: Herds of 20 females and their young are led by a master bull; Behavior: Roan antelope can be very aggressive; Status: Threatened; Interesting Facts: The main predators of roan antelope are lions, leopards, hunting dogs, and hyenas.
