Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Roadside Hedge and Field Since the labour intensive practice of hedge laying ceased in the 1960's and was replaced by mechanical flaying, hedges in the Lincolnshire Wolds have become like this, boundary markers of little use to wildlife. The ploughed field behind is white with chalk although the soil is underlain by glacial boulder clay rather than chalk. In the ice age, the ice sheets moved over the chalk hills to the east in a westerly direction, as a result the boulder clay which was deposited in a large area to the west of the Wolds is full of chalk pebbles.
