Summary
[edit]DescriptionRiver Wear near Queen Alexandra Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 172018.jpg |
English: River Wear near Queen Alexandra Bridge. In this area Sunderland's last two shipyards worked until 1988.
To the right of the picture, across the river, is the covered shipbuilding hall of the Pallion shipyard of Doxford and Sunderland Shipbuilders. Now used for assembling cranes (I think). Moored next to it is an old passenger ferry that was originally going to be converted to a nightclub before the owner ran out of money. In the shipyard's heyday much larger ships were tied up here being outfitted. To the left in the picture is Queen Alexandra bridge, a steel girder bridge being repainted at the time of the photo (hence the different colours). The land at the extreme left, and where the photo was taken, was the Austin and Pickersgill Shipyard until its closure in 1988 and subsequent demolition. |
