[edit]DescriptionRiver Thames southbank path.jpg |
English: 11 August 2018. View from Southwark Bridge looking southwest towards Bankside. The path along the Thames is a major tourist walking route.
I wonder if and when Londoners will complain about excessive tourism. A new word "over-tourism" has been coined. "Bankside ... derives its name from being one of the earliest pieces of embanking done on the edge of the sprawling Thames, providing a solid shore for men and goods to land in a low-lying marshy area." From: "The House by the Thames and the people who lived there." by Gillian Tindall. Pimlico Edition 2007, page 2. § Aerial view from Google Maps. § BBC News website 12 August 2018. Cornwall hit by 'tourist overcrowding' amid UK heatwave". "Cornwall is 'struggling to cope' with 'unprecedented mass tourism' this summer, it is being claimed." § "Imagine living with this crap": tempers in Venice boil over in tourist high season". "As residents leave and visitor numbers soar, the city’s quality of life is being eroded. This summer, irate locals have taken to the streets." Angela Giuffrida reporting for The Guardian 23 July 2017. § "over-tourism an unhealthy appetite for travel" "The world’s most beautiful places are being loved to death. Tourists ought to think hard about why and how they are travelling". The Guardian newspaper - 19 Aug 2018. § Daily Mail 11 July 2015. Barcelona residents say tourism is a bigger problem than poverty." "... new mayor ramps up efforts to introduce a cap on visitors." |
