Summary
[edit]DescriptionRiver Thames, Walton Bridge (old) - geograph.org.uk - 364723.jpg |
English: River Thames: Walton Bridge (old) This is the underside of the old Walton Bridge, a temporary Bailey Bridge type structure erected in 1953 to replace the one damaged during the Second World War. The current Walton Bridge which was built in 1999 is to the left.
The original Walton Bridge was built in 1750 by Samuel Dicker and replaced a ferry. It was a triple arched wooden bridge supported by stone piers. This bridge was replaced in 1786 by a brick and stone structure, only to be replaced itself in 1864 by an iron bridge. This iron bridge was the one damaged in the war, so the current temporary road bridge is the fifth. |
