Summary

[edit]
Description
English: River Thames: Osney Bridge The original stone arched bridge here was constructed in the early 17th century, but on 2 December 1885 the central arch fell into the river when it was swollen and fast flowing after heavy rain. Five schoolchildren were crossing the bridge at the time, but although four were rescued from the river the fifth one sadly drowned. The current iron bridge seen here replaced the central stone arches and was completed in 1888. Today the bridge carries the A420 Botley Road over the river. The posts and boards in the river are designed to guide boats under the central section of what is a very low bridge.
