Summary
[edit]DescriptionRiver Thames, Hampton Court Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 932763.jpg |
English: River Thames: Hampton Court Bridge Please see 927717 for a history of the bridge. This is the downstream side with a narrowboat called Pipedream about to enter the central arch.
The boundary between the local government areas of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and Elmbridge Borough Council runs down the middle of the river but an examination of the Ordnance Survey's 1:10,000 scale maps shows that it does not run through the centre of the centre arch of the bridge but is offset nearer the Elmbridge bank on this side. This is almost certainly due to the fact that the boundary was defined by the centre of the river at a previous point in history, and by one of the earlier bridges at this location, since demolished. Certainly the Ordnance Survey's map of 1872 shows the confluence of the River Mole with the Thames at this point, diverted further downstream by the building of the bridge in 1933, and large islands on the north bank, since removed, that effectively had the centre of the river running further southwards than it does now. |
