Summary
[edit]DescriptionRiver Roding, Town Quay, Barking - geograph.org.uk - 321828.jpg |
English: River Roding: Town Quay, Barking Barking was originally a fishing village, serving Billingsgate Fish Market, but the opening of rail links between the North Sea ports and London in the 19th century meant it was quicker to transport fish by train from these ports straight to the capital rather than waiting for ships to take the longer route down the east coast and up the River Thames. Severe pollution in the River Thames at this time also meant that the method of keeping fish alive in "chests" under the water, but within the boats, was no longer successful, and by about 1900 the fishing industry in Barking had ceased to exist, leaving only a few street and pub names as a reminder of its former importance to the town.
This is the Town Quay Basin looking upstream with a former mill building on the other side. |
