Description
English:

A shallow, clear river winds through a green plain, with a bare hill rising in the background.

Big Hole National Battlefield Site. A view of the river from the Nez Perce encampment area shows willow thickets huddled along the river bank. The Nez Perce camped along the river bottom, where they incorporated willows into practical and recreational uses such as rope-making and children's games. The willows played a role in determining the battle outcome in August of 1877. The dense thicket provided both concealment and entrapment, and deaths on both sides are partially attributed to the willows.
