[edit]DescriptionRiver Adige, Verona - Ponte Pietra - Watch Tower (4819450012).jpg |
This is the stunning looking river in Verona - the Adige. I didn't see any boats going down it, so don't know if it was naviagable. This bridge is the Ponte Pietra. Verona had two bridges in Roman times, and only this one survived, known as the Pons Marmoreus Ponte Pietra was built with five arches in pre-Augustan times. The arch next to the right bank was rebuilt in 1298, together with the tall watch tower, by Alberto della Scala. The constrast between the material used make it very picturesque. A large portion of the four arches on the left were destroyed at the end of World War II, in April 1945. Their reconstruction is worth mentioning due to the fact that most of the old stones were reclaimed from the river. Information from "Verona: History and Masterpieces - English Edition". |
