Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Fragmentary ritual water vessel with an elephant spout, and lid with a seated youthful male. Pakistan (ancient region of Gandhara), 1st century. Bronze. Metropolitan Museum of Art. Such vessels were important to the Buddhist community at Gandhara, as pouring water marked ritual actions. Given its early date, this vessel was likely used in conjunction with the veneration of relics that were housed in stupas (relic mounds) though in later centuries water was also poured on devotional images. On the basis of metallurgical analysis, a single workshop appears to have fabricated this water vessel, the encense burner and the small bronze Buddha suggesting a common date of production.
Bronze. Metropolitan Museum of Art.
