"L'opera è la copia di un dipinto attribuito all'ambito di Justus Susterman (Anversa, 1597 - Firenze, 1681) conservato alla Galleria Nazionale di Parma (inv. n.1024). Rispetto a questo la copia del Gabbi integra abito e sfondo, portando la scala del ritratto dalla mezza figura ai tre quarti di figura.

Nella nobildonna raffigurata, già identificata con Margherita Violante di Savoia, a seguito di raffronti con altri ritratti si è recentemente riconosciuta Margherita de' Medici, moglie dal 1628 di Odoardo Farnese.
