Description
English: This visible image of Hurricane Rita over the extremely warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico was captured on the morning of September 21, 2005, at 11:45 UTC (6:45 a.m. CDT), by the GOES Imager instrument flying aboard NOAA's GOES 12 satellite. Rita was an extremely powerful and intense hurricane that affected the western Gulf Coast in September 2005. It was the eighteenth depression, the seventeenth named or namable storm, the fifth major hurricane, and the second Category 5 hurricane of the infamous 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. When this image was taken, Rita was intensifying rapidly over the Gulf of Mexico, heading toward the Texas-Louisana border region in a west-northwest direction. The intensity of the hurricane when this image was taken was 1-min sustained winds of 140 mph (225 km/h) (120 knots) on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, making it a Category 4 major hurricane, the official minimum central pressure (provided by the NHC) was at or around 941 mbar (27.8 inHg).
