Summary
[edit]DescriptionRisk reduction at SRS (7488953306).jpg | Tanks 18 and 19 will be operationally closed at the Savannah River Site (SRS), located near Aiken, S.C. The start of grouting on April 2, 2012, culminates 32 years of waste removal and cleaning operations in the 1.3 million-gallon tanks and begins a process that will result in the first SRS waste tanks being closed since the first two were closed in 1997. Pictured here is the first cement truck that arrived at SRS on the morning of April 2 loaded with a specially formulated grout that will be pumped into a hopper and through lines to Tank 19, which will be filled with grout this summer along with Tank 18. The tanks become the first two hazardous waste tanks to be operationally closed since the DOE's first tanks were closed in 1997, also at SRS. |
