Summary
[edit]DescriptionRising Sea Levels hit Fiji.jpg |
English: Fiji, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, is facing a grave threat from climate change. Rising sea levels are affecting several coastal villages, with predictions that more than 600 communities could be forced to relocate in the coming years. This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on the 19 of December 2022, shows the southern part of Viti Levu island, one of the areas most affected by the rising sea levels. The Copernicus Sentinel-6A satellite provides crucial data for monitoring sea level rise, by measuring the height of the ocean surface with high accuracy and precision, it allows to track the changes over time and understand the causes of sea level rise, such as the ocean’s thermal expansion and ice melting, as well as to improve weather forecasting and ocean circulation models. |
