| Description |
English: Ring Chesters hill fort. Ring Chesters is a well preserved, defended, Iron Age settlement, oval in shape surrounded by three concentric banks. The inside of the enclosure contains the circular stone foundations of about eight stone-built prehistoric buildings. The hill fort occupies a prominent position on a hilltop and there is evidence nearby of at least two phases of agricultural use in the form of cultivation terraces (lynchets), and later ploughing http://www.keystothepast.info/durhamcc/K2P.nsf/K2PDetail?readform&PRNMAP=N588
The view is south-east over the Elsdon Burn valley. The hill in the foreground is Great Hetha, which sports another hill fort on its summit, with another, Little Hetha on a lower ridge to its left. Behind, on the left, are Newton Tors and Hare Law, and, on the right, the great massif of Cheviot, about 9km distant. A similar (wider angle) view is shown in 287289 |
