Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 80-130 cm; Weight: 3.5-5.6 kg; Identification: The ring-tailed coatimundi is tawny red with a black face, white spots above and below each eye and cheek, and a white throat and belly. Its feet are black, and the tail has black rings; Habitat: Tropical lowlands, dry high-altitude forests, oak forests, mesquite grasslands; Diet: Omnivore: insects, fruit, spiders, scorpions, small vertebrates, eggs; Reproduction: Coatis build their nests in trees where, after gestating for 77 days, 3-5 young are born. They remain in the nest for 5-6 weeks; Social Structure: Females often gather in groups, sharing a territory with a solitary, dominant male that lives at the center of their home range; Behavior: A father coatimundi will often join a female band after the young are born so he can learn to recognize his offspring; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Coatimundi is a South American term for a lone male.
