Title
rim (interior)
Description
English: Pottery rim sherd with a with a pair of parallel oblique grooves running vertically down the length of the sherd and a pair of perpendicular finger nail impressions to the right of the grooves. The rim is internally bevelled like those illustrated in Manby (1999) on page 61, Table 6.2. The sherd is made of gabbroic clay that weathers over the gabbro outcrop on the Lizard in Cornwall. The fabric has inclusions of pale felspars, dark augite and mica and is orangey-brown on the exterior and mid-brown on the interior of the sherd with an orange core. This 'mucky' gabbroic fabric and type of decoration are seen on Grooved Ware vessels, dating from c.2900-2400 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming).

Anna Brindley in Cleal & MacSween (1999) illustrates similar nail impressions with grooves on a Grooved Ware vessel from Barholm in Lincolnshire, and another with a similar rim and vertical grooves from Spong Hill in Norfolk, on page 140, Fig.14.2, Nos.9 & 16.
