[edit]DescriptionRills (Endless Caverns, Virginia, USA) (30545962014).jpg |
Rills in Endless Caverns in Virginia, USA. The subparallel grooves incised on the sloping limestone surface shown above are rills, which are vadose dissolution features (= formed above the water table in a cave). Slightly acidic water running downward along the rock surface (this follows cave passage flooding events) will dissolve some of the limestone, leaving a series of shallow, parallel channels. The publicly accessible portions of Endless Caverns are developed in structurally tilted carbonates of the New Market Limestone (Middle Ordovician). Other portions of Endless Caverns are in overlying units: the Lincolnshire Limestone and the Edinburgh Formation. Locality: Endless Caverns, south of the town of New Market, eastern Rockingham County, northern Virginia, USA |
