Zebras make their appearance at the Rijeka Carnival

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Never failing to disappoint in its exuberance and glory, the wild extravaganza, the Rijeka Carnival was staged on 19 February 2023.

Held at the beginning of Lent, before Ash Wednesday in the Catholic calendar, the carnival is the largest in Croatia attracting 100s of participants from all parts of Europe and further afield to flaunt their stuff. 2008 had a record number of 150,000 visitors. This year marks its 40th anniversary and boasted around 100 groups.

The carnival originated a century ago when this area was the most passionate about the Masquerade (Maškare or Mesopust), and carnival parades and balls hosted Austro Hungarian, Russian and German aristocrats and royalty. In 1982 it was reignited, but only had three groups.

This year provided a feast for the eyes as the floats paraded by and people came from all parts of the country and the world to enjoy the spectacle and party.
