Rock carvings at Kanheri caves Mumbai India

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Kanheri caves are monument complex in the national park within the city boundaries of Mumbai. More than 100 rock-cut caves are found here, spanning a period of Buddhist activity from 2nd-century BCE to the 15th-century CE. Cave 3 is the largest and most elaborate. It includes an ancient apsidal cathedral-style Chaitya hall. At the entrance of this chaitya hall, on both left and right are large life-size rock reliefs showing couples (probably donors or socially significant individuals of the community when these caves were made). Though damaged, they are significant in their details with information about the dress, jewelry, culture, physique and other aspects of ancient India.
