Description
English: Latvia, Russian Empire backside of stampless folded paid letter to London, 'RIGA' cancel, various manuscripts, black 'MEMEL 2. NOV.' transit, back Dutch red boxed 'Duitsch Grensch the Arnhem', British 'FPO NO17 1823' receiver, manuscript "25-61½" (centimes, kopeks). The letter consists of a list of goods, their prices and exchange rates. This may be a quotation (tender?) or an invoice.

Details:

  • October 18, 1823 (Julian) a letter dated October 18/30 reflecting the Julian/Gregorian calendar posted at Riga. The sender wrote 'via Amsterdam' to indicate the preferred route. At the post office weight and rate was assessed and marked on the letter, manuscript at left large '18' kopeks category. The letter was paid and restated by black handstamp 'FRANCO'. The postmark 'RIGA' was applied.
Dobin: 40 type 1.03B, rarity 4.[1]
  • Black handstamp 'MEMEL 2. NOV.' was applied at transit.
  • At entering the Netherlands the red boxed 'Duitsch Grensch te Arnhem' was applied.
  • November 17, handstamp 'FPO NO17 1823'. British receiver marking at the London Foreign Post Office branch.
