Description |
English: Shallow pits in the grass-covered ground are visible in the open area between pine trees. Big Hole National Battlefield Site. A significant portion of the battle narrative concerns the time that army soldiers spent besieged in rifle pits. Facing significant pressure from the Nez Perce, the soldiers spent many hours in the rifle pits. They represent standard techniques for field fortification used by the army during this period, involving digging a shallow pit deep enough to lie in and mounding soil in front for cover.
