Nor is it likely that theleague would have failed in its object but forthe defection of the Pope. In 1509 Louismade a campaign against the Venetians andoverthrew them in the gi-eat battle of Agna-DELLO. The state of Venice was for a seasonbrought to the verge of extinction, but wassaved by the action of the Pope, who wentover to the Venetian side and took with himthe Emperor and Henry VIII. of England.The war, conducted on the part of the French 150 UNIVERSAL HISTORY.—THE MODERN WORLD. by the great general, Gaston de Foix, con-tinued until the death of that commander atRavenna, and his army was finally defeated in the battle of Novara in 1513.—Such were thebeginnings of the long struggle of the Frenchfor the mastery of Italy.

Atthe close of the thirteenth century the thronewas occupied by Magnus Ladulas, surnaniedthe Barnlock—a title which he had earned byprotecting the granaries of the Swedish peas-ants against the rapacity of the lords. Afterhis death Sweden was plunged into conten-tions and strifes; for, like Edward III. ofEngland and Philip IV. of France, Mag-nus had three sons to contend for the suc-cession. These turmoils were not settled until theyear 1319, when Magnus Smek became king,to the exclusion of other claimants. In thefollowing year, by the death of his mother,he inherited the crown of Norway, and thusunited the two kingdoms in one.
