For two years (1328-30)Louis remained in Italy; but the impositionof heavy taxes, to which he was obliged to re-sort as a means of supporting the Imperialgovernment, soon alienated the affections ofhis subjects. He grew into disfavor. Hatredtook the place of friendship, and when hefinally set out for Germany he was followedby the execrations of those whom he had in-tended to release from bondage.
