ntance of KingTheodore, first became familiar with his meth-ods *and principles of Government. The king, at the beginning, conceived agreat liking for the few English officers whocame to his shore. This was particularlytrue of the British Consul Plowden, who, fromMassowah, had given material aid and counselto Theodore in the matter of putting down aninsurrection. Plowden joined the king inthis work, and was unfortunately killed bythe Abyssinian insurgents. The character ofthe monarch was well illustrated in what en«sued. When the rebellion was suppressed, hedelilierately ordered the execution of morethan a hundred rebels, as a sort of sacrifice to the memory of his friend, the Consul. Soonafterwards Captain Cameron was sent out toMassowah to take the vacant consulship.
