Estimates havebeen made of those in North America,giving an aggregate of about thirtythousand. The population is compara-tively stationary. The manner of lifedoes not permit of the formation of greatcommunities. Diseases peculiar to thearctic regions also tend to reduce thenatural increase. Philanthropy canhardly discover in the race the evidences and promise of a great development.While there is no retrogression there islittle progress. We may look upon theEsquimaux as the residue of one of thoseforms of human development which inprocess of time will doubtless be re-placed by other forms of man-life moreprogressive and better calculated forthe promotion of the interests
