The market placesof the coast cities wereheaped with the resources of many na-tions, and by the consumption of thesethe people grew great and intellectual.The Phoenician mind rose to preemi-nence at an age so far removed that his-tory is unable to reach it with her faint-est taper. This small strip of seacoast, fore he could possess himself of the keyof the Phoenician coast. It was, however, the Phoenician mindrather than military resistance that gaveto the people their immemorial fame.There was a certain adroit- Mental activityness and skill for which we ^^^::iishould look in vain among antiquity,any other people of antiquity. Theywho foreran and outstripped the Greeksmust have been both intellectual andexpert above all nations of their times.
