The(iiiarani-Brazilian group includesfour subordinate groups of na-tions, or three besides the Caribs.These are the Guarani proper,the Tupi, and the Botecudo.There are also the Puris, occupy-ing sloping coasts south of Rio deJaneiro. Each of these fourgroups is in turn subdivided, asis also the Carib stock of the north.The subdivisions are not arbitrary, butare based upon distinctions in languageand in physical characteristics. Withincertain limits the race may be viewed asa whole, and, since space is here wantedto enumerate the local tribes of the vastregion of the Amazon valley and EasternBrazil, we may give an outline of thecharacteristics of the race as such.
