Moresimply, the question stands thus: Is theBlack division of the human race olderor younger than the other branches ofthe human family? Strangely enough,arguments seemingly valid may be dis-covered on both sides of this question.Historically and ethnologically it wouldappear that the Black race is the old-est division of the human family. Informer parts of the present work wehave held to this contention, showingthat the native seat of the human racewas in that part of the world from whichthe Blacks have evidently proceeded.From that situation all the other racesare far off; that is, the Ruddy and theBrown races have seemingly made theirway to great distances from that centerout of which only the whole humanfamily could have arisen. It would thus appear that theother races have arisen from a Blackstem, have branched therefrom; havedifferentiated from an older stock ofdarker and still darker hue down to thecomplexion of blackness. Such reasoning wouldpoint clearly to the conclusion that theBlack race was the first of human-ity to rise out of merely animal con-ditions; the first to receive the rudi-ments of reason, and of those instinctsand sentiments that are above the hori-zon of the beasts; the first to stand ina situation toward which the upliftedprehensile hand of the chimpanzee wasstretched forth to grasp the heel of atrue humanity.
