The name Esquimaux was given longago to the people under considerationby the Indian races of North America.The Indians were accustomed to namepeople and things according to fitness.The Ojibwas called their northernneighbors the Askimcg. The Abenakispronounced it the Eskimatsic. Perhapsall of the Indian tribes of the north thusdescribed the Orarians as the people 440 GREAT RACES OF MANKIND. who ate their meat raw; for such is themeaning- of the term. As to the Esqui-maux themselves, they took the name ofInnuit, signifying men, or people. It hasbeen the wont of nearly all the barba-rians to assert their dignity by callingthe people of their own tribe, as if bypreeminence, the men.
