The correct position of the feet, legs, body, arms,and hands are the same as already described on page198 in the notes on driving a single horse or a pair. To start a four-in-hand, the horses should, be-fore starting, be well up in their collars, so that thetraces are taut. The leaders reins should be short-ened by grasping them in the right hand, separatedby the middle finger, about a foot in front of theleft hand and replacing them in the left by carryingthe right hand behind the left. Take off the brakeas quietly as possible, then advance the right hand,put the little and second fingers over the two offreins with the middle and index fingers so placedover the two near reins that the latter may begrasped.
