Summary
[edit]DescriptionRichmond-Lockwood House, Delaware Avenue, Bryant, Buffalo, NY.jpg |
English: Built in 1888, this house was originally designed by Marling and Burdett, and was renovated circa 1918 to its present appearance and size by Esenwein and Johnson. The house replaced an earlier Gothic Revival-style house that was built in 1873 by Jewett M. Richmond, whom bought the land when it was at the edge of the city and extended back to Richmond Avenue, encompassing several adjacent blocks. The previous house burned in 1887, leading to the Richmond family constructing the present house. The house was sold to Thomas B. Lockwood in 1918, whom renovated the house after buying it to its present appearance. The house features a multi-gabled roof with stucco and half-timbering at and above the second floor, a brick first floor with stone trim, a sunroom and porch with gothic arched openings and stone surrounds, casement windows, an uncovered front terrace, a stone base, dormers, and brick chimneys. The house, like many on Delaware Avenue, has been converted into a commercial office building, after being sold to the Diocese of Buffalo by Lockwood’s widow, Marion Birge Lockwood, in 1950, and then, after being utilized as a retreat center and school by the diocese, was sold and converted into an office building in 2002. The house is a contributing structure in the Delaware Avenue Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. |
