RICHARD AND FELIX MANSFIELD(About 1862) AT DERBY SCHOOL 37 easily understand that the child had grave reason todread his feathered foes. In boyhood Mansfield received some tuition, atJena, Yverdon, Bourbourg, and Berlin, and finally atDerby, England, where he was treated with muchkindness by the head master, Rev. Walter Clarke.That kindness he never forgot. His affection for hisold teacher was constant and it was often mani-fested. Indeed, one of the most winning traits ofMansfields character was fidelity of remembrance ofkind treatment. Once, when I was about to sailfor England, he gave to me a letter of hearty com-mendation to that good friend of his at Derby, urgingme, at the same time, to visit the school and deliveran address on Acting: and, he added, Tell themsomething about me. I was not very happy in Eng-land, when I played there; but at the school theytreated me kindly, and I would like them to knowthat one of their old boys really is doing something,—even though he had not
