Description

This 1897 photo shows Premier Richard Seddon on a visit to Pompeii. Seddon (seated, with black bow tie) was in Pompeii during a five month trip around the world. The photo is included in an album which belonged to Seddon’s daughter, Mary Stuart Seddon. A handwritten title page at the beginning of the album states, ‘A memento of our trip round the world on the occasion of the celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. We left Wellington 15th April 1897 – went via San Francisco and New York to London and returned via Naples and Suez Canal and landed in Wellington on the 8th September 1897.’ The album also includes photos of Seddon in Samoa, Sri Lanka, England, the United States and Australia.

Richard Seddon was Premier for 13 years (1893-1906), making him New Zealand’s longest-serving leader to date. He was born in Lancashire, England on 22 June 1845. He was removed from school at the age of twelve for being an unpromising pupil, and emigrated to Australia in 1863. Three years later he sailed to New Zealand to work on the goldfields in Waimea. Seddon first entered Parliament in 1881. His Liberal government is remembered for its reforms to land, labour and taxation. Seddon famously referred to New Zealand as ‘God’s own country’ and was known by the nickname ‘King Dick’ because of his autocratic style.
